Graduation Photography
Ahhhh, it's that time of year again!!!! High school graduations.
Well I shouldn't complain as the last few years I have only done photo shoots with students I like and know, so it has all gone well, previous years, not so much.
The usual problems of hair/makeup going wrong or not to their liking and taking twice as long to get ready, somehow consuming the entire day, and then running out of daylight for photography time. Now I can usually come up with things on the spot (from doing weddings in a tropical climate) but once the light is gone, the light is gone!!!
I cracks me up how much money gets spent on graduations these days. It is a big moment in a students life, a rite of passage, and I remember mine clearly, though we did our own hair and makeup and an aunty usually made our dress. There was certainly no hiring of cars or a professional photographer.
There was, however, always someones Dad that was good with a camera or had a good camera who would get swept up in taking everyones photos though sometimes missing out on his own kids moment. The flavour at the moment is to hire a photographer, meet with them at a location for a shoot and sometimes even at the home prior, to get family photos. This way all the family can get in the photos and enjoy the day a lot more.
This day is HUGE for the girls. They get their nails done, sometimes tans, eyebrows waxed, most book a hotel in the city so they can get ready there with some friends and stay the night afterwards. They hire hairdressers and makeup artists to come to their room and its all part of the fun and chaos, not too dissimilar to a modern wedding. It is sooooo much easier being a guy...hire a suit, shower and shave, comb hair...done.
THE thing to do here in Cairns is to all meet up, with your hired wheels (anything from 1960's or 70's seems to be the go) near the Cairns Cruise Liner Terminal. The local fisherman clear out from their usual spots as the inundation of hormones, perfume and selfie taking teens gets too much for them AND the fish to bare!!!
Now the hired wheel is a huge thing for the boys. It used to be who your partner will be, still is to some extent, but the car is the attention grabber...the noisier the better, and you may only get to be seen in it for a few seconds arriving at the graduation venue.
Some owners of these cars will do a deal for a "bottle of rum", hopefully a good one, others have a business renting on an hourly rate (which helps pay the cost of keeping these beasts). One such limo is $300 per hour and has a "party" happening on the inside. Splitting that between a few of them seems to be the go, as it can certainly fit a few.
And so the tradition will go on, a night to remember, and a rush of badly exposed selfies to flood social media for the next few days!!
