Iphone Camera vs the DSLR

Well you might be thinking ..well der! of course your 8 thousand dollar DSLR is going to win this comp..but I am amazed at how good the camera on the latest iPhone is. AND they just keep on getting better.
Love the pano function, and you can have a heap of fun with the slo-mo, and when the lighting is good it is fairly comparable to a cheap DSLR if you are just getting a straight landscape photography type tourist shot.
However....low light is when you tend to stash it back in your back pocket.
Well so I always thought...
As they say, the best camera is the one you have on you at the time. And lets admit it, who goes anywhere these days without their phone??
Last week the sky put on a brilliant display at sunset here in Cairns, and fortunately for me it just happened to be the evening my daughter wanted to go and do some photography down on the Esplanade. So of course she hogged my Canon, which was the biggest tease ever not being able to use it with these amazing colours and mammatus cloud formations hanging from the sky. So I got the iPhone out and had to be satisfied with that.
THE RESULTS WHERE MUCH BETTER THAN I EXPECTED!
So this is what we saw from the carpark, not so much colour as yet but the mammals cloud formations were there.
All these examples the first shot is the iPhone, second Canon...
The highlights are a little blown on the iPhone shots , but not too much as you can still see some detail in the street light.

and then as the colour started to come out...a bit hard to see the detail on the screen at medium res, but fairly comparable!
Then the magic went off...
And the grand finale....soft pastels, (plus bats).
I actually prefer the iPhone camera shot here (and not because of the bats).
So the yellow content seems higher in all the iPhone shots, but they aren't too bad...especially if you are out and about and this happens in the sky and you aren't lugging gear with you..
